The new Sony Walkman digital player is light, has great sound and fits snugly into the ear — best for use by fitness enthusiasts

Many of us are familiar with the Walkman series of products from Sony. An ambassador of portable audio from the previous century, Sony has carried the name from portable cassette and CD players on to many of their newer devices. The newest one to carry the name is the Sony W Series NWZ-W262 MP3 Player. Quite a mouthful, yes, so we will just stick to Walkman.

The new Walkman has the MP3 player built right into the headphones. Positioned for use by sports and fitness enthusiasts, the Walkman sits behind your head and unlike most other MP3 players, doesn’t have a wire that can (and will) dangle. Weighing in at only 32g, you will not be feeling much over your head. However, the cord is fixed in length and cannot be adjusted. This can be inconvenient, especially if you have a small head.

The Walkman is waterproof, so you can wash off the sweat and dirt with some water; this is particularly useful if you get the white model. The W262 has only 2GB of space but variants with a higher capacity are also available in the market.

The Walkman doesn’t have an LCD display and has the controls on the ear buds itself. The left features the volume and play mode (playlists/shuffle) controls, while the right has the power switch, play/pause and previous/next controls. Since you cannot see the controls when you are wearing the player, controlling it can be a tiny tricky in the beginning. But the lack of an LCD display does wonders for its battery life — charging the battery (over USB) for only about five minutes can give you up to an hour’s worth of playtime. However, total play time is only about eight hours.

Article continues below

To play through your music, Sony has included the “Zappin” mode. It grants you to “zap” through your songs at four seconds a track by holding the play button; hit the play button and it “zaps out” to the selected track. It works as a good workaround for the lack of a screen.

The Walkman has an in-ear headphone system which works well to drain sound out and give you a contained acoustic experience. The pack contains buds of two other sizes, which lets you adjust how the player will fit in your ear.

The sound quality is great. In fact, many other headphones with a similar sound quality will cost as much as this MP3 player does. The Walkman — due to its short battery life and lack of a screen — is not one you take with you on a trip, but it could work well within defined uses. The price point is especially tempting and makes for a justifiable impulse (oxymoron, I know) purchase. It’s available for Dh329 at leading electronics retailers.

This is the first of a series of reviews that will cover what is contained in the Adobe CS6 Master Collection. Adobe releases CS6 with five separate suites of products. They are Design Premium, Design Standard, Web Premium, Production Premium, and Master Collection. Add to that, they a have also have the Creative Cloud – a subscription based suite that gives you access to all of the individual products for a $49.99 per month subscription fee. You can go on-line to compare what is contained in each version. The goal of this series it to define what each product does and provide information of what the new version brings to the table.

As with the recent releases of Photoshop, this version also comes in two editions; the standard of Photoshop, and Photoshop CS6 Extended edition. The extended version is targeted to professionals in film and television, manufacturing, architecture, engineering, medicine, science, and those doing 3D rendering.

Photoshop CS6 is a raster graphics editor. That is, it is an editor that grants users to manipulate, edit, composite, and paint images on a computer screen and save them in one of many popular raster file formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF. This makes Photoshop extremely good for working with photographs

So what is new with Photoshop CS6?

•New Crop Tool – is hardware accelerated and completely new. It now has multiple overlays including ones for working with the Golden Ration, Golden Spiral, Diagonal, Triangle, Grid, as well as the Rule of Thirds. The Crop tool now also works in a non-destructive mode meaning that you can use it and never lose your content. There is also a Perspective Crop tool that uses a flexible marquee to outline and straighten image elements or scenes photographed on an angle. You can now also save your specific crop dimensions as presets giving you the capability to perform consistent crops across a whole series of images.

•Extended Content-Aware family of technologies – has now added two new retouching tools. The first is a Content-Aware mode for the Patch tool. This gives you greater control when repairing images by letting you select the sample area where you want to create the patch, and then adjusting how the patch is applied. Then it also gives you the capability to specify more precisely how the patch is mixed with the image. The second tool is the Content-Aware Move tool. Using this tool you can move or extend an object to another area in the image. The tool then automatically recomposes and blends the object giving you the capability to reposition awkward elements to create better compositions, interactively extend the top of an image to change its format from horizontal to vertical, or increase the size of an object to make it more dominant in a design.

It can print at a maximum of 12.5 ISO ppm black and 9.3 ISO color and is about average size for a multifunction device at 19.4″ (W) x 17.7″ (D) x 8.6″ [...]

If you are in need of a home or home office printer, you may wish to think about one the latest units in Canons famous PIXMA line of all-in-one devices. The PIXMA MX892 is a 4-in-1 device capable of printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. It can print at a maximum of 12.5 ISO ppm black and 9.3 ISO color and is about average size for a multifunction device at 19.4″ (W) x 17.7″ (D) x 8.6″ (H).

For starters, the unit features wireless printing to and scanning from computers and a variety ofmobile devices via Wi-Fi. Like other newer Canon, wireless units, it is also compatible with AirPrint, a solution that works with both iOS and Android powered devices and Google Cloud Print. If you prefer a hard-wired connection, you may use either the USB 2.0 port and cable or plug it via Ethernet to the PC/laptop or router.

The PIXMA MX892 also comes with a 3.0 LCD screen and a dual function control panel. That means that the panel either shows function buttons or numbers depending on the mode in which you are operating. It also comes with Canons HD Movie Print which grants for the printing of still pics from videos captured with compatible Canon camcorders and cameras and Auto Photo Fix II to ensure better pic results.

Paper handling is another one of this machines strengths. The paper can be fed in either the front cassette or the rear facing tray depending on your needs at the time. It can hold up to 150 sheets of standard A4 paper at a time and the attached automatic document feeder (ADF) is rated at 35 pages. Additionally, the ADF is capable of making both single- and double-sided duplicates and scans. The printer itself is also capable of duplex output.

The PIXMA MX892 comes with five separate ink cartridges: black, pic black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Unfortunately, the cartridges only come in standard capacity, which is different than most multifunctions on the market today. PC World rated the capacity of the standard black cartridge at approximately 339 pages, color cartridges somewhere between 486 and 555 pages , and the pic black (only used when printing photos), at 666 prints.

Overall, this is a good printer for those with moderate to medium printing needs. As mentioned above, the lack of high-yield cartridges virtually eliminates any utility as an office printer for anyone who prints a good amount.

Need a new printer? We suggest Amazon.RATING: 2.75 stars DETAILS: Color Inkjet AIO COST: $179.99

The so-called “paperless society” is still a pipe dream judging by the stacks of documents that go into our recycling bin every week. That spells good news for printer makers, since printing is their bread and butter, and for consumers, because high-quality, multifunction color inkjet and laser printers continue to come down in price while adding features.

The Epson WorkForce 845 ($199 MSRP, $150 street) is a compact AIO (all-in-one) inkjet with two-sided printing, scanning, and faxing. It promises fast output speeds and advanced networking features all at a modest price pitched at the home office/small office (SOHO) market.

Setting Up Epson’s Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer

At about 17 inches wide, a foot high, and about 22 pounds, the WorkForce 845 is compact but sturdy. It is basically a rectangular black box with a contemporary sleek look. A massive touch-screen panel dominates the control panel, even though only a portion of the touch screen actually displays content, while touch-sensitive buttons occupy the remaining real estate.

The Epson 845 color inkjet multifunction printer includes dual paper trays with a 250 sheet capacity each, meaning you can divide a typical 500 sheet ream between both. Note though there is no manual feed for a one-off print job.

The Epson WorkForce 845 is a very inexpensive multifunction printer with fast output and strong pic printing.

The front panel also includes slots for the full range of memory cards including CompactFlash, MemoryStick, SD, SDHC, and many more. A single USB slot accepts thumb drives or (externally powered) hard drives. Some smart phones can connect to the USB slot to share pics if the phone supports mounting itself as a USB mass storage device.

You can connect the WorkForce 845 directly to a PC or Mac by a rear USB port, or use the Ethernet jack to plug the printer into a router accessible from any machine in your LAN. Better yet, built-in wireless support accomplishes the same thing with no cabling at all (well, besides the power cable).

When you first boot up the WorkForce 845, the screen walks you through initial setup, including connecting to a wireless network if available, and installing the four ink cartridges (CMYK). Considering the printer comes with a color display, the set-up wizard could be better illustrated, and it could provide more detailed directions.

Typing characters, such as a wireless password, is a bit cumbersome as you need to scroll through each letter — it does not pop up a virtual keyboard as on an iPhone or iPad. But once you are done, you are done.

Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer Software Support

Before you even install anything on your computer, the Workforce 845 is quite functional. You can copy, of course, but you can also print from or scan to a supported memory device. You can even browse and choose pics from a camera memory card and print them directly without any computer at all.

Still, most people will want to install the driver software. Epson includes print and scan drivers for both PC and Mac. Mac owners should note that network functionality is somewhat reduced compared to the PC software. For example some features, such as initiating a scan from the printer control panel, only work with Mac when connected by USB, not network.

Adobe Lightroom 4.1 is a comprehensive, self-contained environment for importing, editing, organising, printing, and sharing your photos. Lightroom accommodates JPGs and video, but it’s primarily designed with RAW image files in mind: All of its editing is lossless, and its many tools are designed to tease hidden visual information out of your RAW photos. Unlike the jam-packed but costly Adobe Photoshop toolset, the Lightroom is optimised for digital photographers. The latest iteration is not revolutionary, but it adds an impressive number of important new features. See also Group test: what is the best photo-editing software?

Lightroom’s design is set up around “modules,” with each tab revealing context-sensitive menus pertinent to a specific task.

Among the most visible changes to Lightroom are two new modules. The Map module seems to be a concession to the pervasiveness of GPS-enabled smartphones: When you import geotagged photos, you can see them arrayed on a Google Map. Most cameras do not perform location tagging, so Lightroom lets you drag pics around on the map, or associate groups of pics with saved locations.

Meanwhile, the Book module gives you a new way to share and publish your work; it’s essentially a page layout program, where you can arrange text and pics on various predesigned page templates–as on Shutterfly, for example. When you are done, you can save the project as a PDF file, or order the finished book through on-line bookmaker Blurb.

In addition, the existing Develop module, where the main image editing action happens, has undergone some very positive changes. The new Highlight and Shadow Recovery sliders hugely simplify the tasks of recovering details lost in shadows and improving the contrast in bright regions. Indeed, you can dramatically improve many pics by judiciously using those two sliders.

Beginning with Lightroom 2, you could “paint” mask layers onto your pics and then apply localised improvements (such as exposure, contrast, and saturation) to those areas. Lightroom 4 adds some new tools, including sharpness, noise reduction, and moiré to your localized toolkit. You can even apply white balance this way, which is best for pics in which different light sources illuminate the subject and the background.

Also, you are no longer limited to painting masks with the adjustment brush. Lightroom now supplies a graduated filter, which you can use to apply a gradual effect across pics vertically, horizontally, or at any angle in between.

If you have ever struggled to make your prints look as good on paper or on the Web as they do on your own monitor, you will appreciate Lightroom’s new Soft Proofing. Turn it on, and you can graphically see the parts of the pic that are out of the destination’s color gamut, similar to the way you can see “blown out” areas when you activate brightness clipping. Soft proofing doesn’t fix your color problems for you–to handle that job, you will have to tweak the hue or saturation of the affected regions–but it’s a powerful way to ensure that your final prints look the way you want them to.

And if you have multiple destinations in mind–perhaps you are posting a pic to SmugMug and making a pic book through Blurb–you’ll appreciate being able to make virtual duplicates of soft proofs so that you can adjust the colors in each one for optimal appearance wherever they appear.

Though Lightroom remains primarily a pic management program, you can now use it to trim video clips that you have taken with your camera, and share or publish them. Most pic organisers handle only still photos. Just do not anticipate to apply any Develop module editing magic for videos.

Unfortunately, some of Lightroom’s tiny annoyances remain. For one thing, cropping a pic still feels as backward as working in a mirror: The mouse moves the image, not the crop box. And you still have to import your pics into Lightroom’s library before you can do anything with them. But at long last, Lightroom has a slider to control the zoom level.

The Samsung Galaxy S III flagship smartphone. Photo: AFP

After months of secrecy, Samsung finally announced the much awaited Galaxy SIII smartphone on Thursday at an event in London. The phone packs what is currently the ideal in terms of hardware and software on any Android smartphone. But what are these specs exactly and how do they compare against rival smartphones? This is what we will find out today.

Samsung Galaxy S III
On paper, few phones this day can match the Galaxy SIII. It seems to have the ideal of everything and in some aspects that is true. Considering Samsung’s expertise in display making, the Galaxy S III’s display is bound to be spectacular. The processor is already winning benchmarks in early hands-on previews. The battery is seriously huge for the thickness of the phone and the phone seems pretty smooth running on the latest version of Android.

Then there are also all the other software enhancements that Samsung has added to the phone. The Siri-like S-Voice that listens to you and does basic tasks like opening apps, showing the weather, searching the web, etc. The phone can track your eyes with its front camera and keeps the display on while your eyes are open and switches it off when you close your eyes. While typing a message, if you pick up and put the phone against your ear the Galaxy S III automatically calls the person for you. If a call comes in the phone even warns you of previous messages and missed calls that came from the same number that you may have missed. Samsung thinks it makes the phone human and indeed some of it is very clever.

But not everything about the phone is great. One of our major gripe with the phone is the design, which looks spectacularly mundane for a flagship phone. The back of the phone even reminded us of Samsung’s cheaper Android phones. The phone comes in two color finishes, Pebble Blue and Marble white, with the former having a brushed metal finish and the latter a glossy one. Neither of them, however, manage to invoke the same feeling when you look at, say, the HTC One X, the Nokia Lumia 800 or the iPhone 4S. Over time, the design of the phone might grow on us, as it did with the Galaxy Nexus, but it will disappoint anyone who sees it for the first time.

Samsung also has a sketchy history with updating their phones whenever a new version of Android comes out. Ask any Galaxy S II or Galaxy Note user in India if they have received the Android 4.0 and you will know what they feel about it. These, too, were the flagship devices for the company once upon a time and there is no way to tell if history will not repeat itself.

That aside, however, there is tiny to keep the Galaxy S III from taking the crown for the ideal Android smartphone that its predecessor held on to for so long. Samsung has announced that the phone will launch in India on May 29 with the M.R.P. being around Rs. 38,000 (actual price would be around Rs. 34,000). We are yet to get our hands on this phone but from what we have seen so far, it looks like a winner to us.

HTC One X

Our previous favorite Android smartphone, the One X still has a lot going for it. For starters, it still is the ideal looking Android smartphone out in the market this day and nothing that Samsung offers can match it in that department. It also has an incredible display that we know for a fact, having used it first hand, that it’s brilliant and easily one of the ideal things about the phone. And even though the Galaxy S III beats the One X in benchmarks, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor is no slouch and outside of benchmarks you will never feel the difference.

It also comes with Android 4.0 and even though we are not huge fans of Sense 4.0 it does add some useful features, even though nothing that can compare with what Samsung has added on the Galaxy S III. Camera performance remains a weak area and even though it is fast with acceptable image and video quality, ‘acceptable’ is not the adjective you should be hearing for anything on a flagship device.

When it comes to updates, HTC is not known to be any better or worse than Samsung, even though in recent times they have been a bit quicker on the uptake, being faster to update their phones to Android 4.0 than Samsung. This gives us a bit more confidence in the fact that the One X is more likely to get the next version on time than the Galaxy S III.

All things considered, we think the One X is a worthy alternative to the Galaxy S III. Especially for someone who gives preference to form over function.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

If regular updates is what you worry about then the Galaxy Nexus is the one for you. If there is any phone most likely to get the next version of Android, that too on the first day, this is it. But there’s a lot more to this phone than regular updates.

Running on stock Android, the Galaxy Nexus offers you the pure Android 4.0 experience, as intended by Google. This might not seem like much until you actually use it, after which it will be difficult to get back to any other Android phone that does not have a stock ROM. This is the second biggest selling point of this phone.

Other things include a gorgeous display, fairly thin body and smooth performance. The hardware might not seem like much on paper or in benchmark scores but it’s more than enough in practice. Having stated that, the Galaxy Nexus’ hardware lacks the sheer horsepower of the other two Android phones here, which also makes it less future proof and it will begin showing its age a lot sooner than others.

There are other things to worry about too, such as camera performance, which is the least impressive here, above average looks, only 16GB memory and a battery life, which is known to be unimpressive.

In other words, the Galaxy Nexus is great if you’re an Android purist or a software developer but if you want a more of an all-round device, you should look elsewhere.

Apple iPhone 4S

The odd man out in this group, the iPhone 4S is also the oldest. But don’t let the numbers in the chart fool you, this one can still hold on to its own. For starters, that glass and metal body is classier than both the Samsung phones combined and only the One X with its unibody design can come close.

It also has some other significant advantages. The OS is smoother and a lot simpler. The number of quality apps, especially games, is significantly higher on iOS and it also always gets all the new apps and games first. The camera is significantly better than the one on the One X and the Galaxy Nexus and if the Galaxy S III has the same camera as the S II then it will again be inferior to the one on the 4S. The iPhone also has the widest range of accessories ever made for any device.

But there are a lot of disadvantages as well. The screen, even though gorgeous, is very small for watching videos or browsing the web. The glass body looks great but is not known to take a lot of damage. iOS has improved significantly over the years but compared to an open OS like Android is still very restrictive (unless, of course, you jailbreak it). And lastly, Apple’s ridiculous pricing in India makes it very poor value for money.

Overall, the iPhone 4S is for those who value a consistent user experience, great camera quality and quality apps over everything else and are willing to spend the huge bucks for it. But if you want something with more bang for your buck, the Android phones are a better choice.

The Logitech AV speaker stand functions as a neat tiny docking station for your iPad

If you are a regular reader of this column, chances are that you own a tablet; you technology enthusiast, you! And there is an even higher chance that it’s an iPad, as the device has indisputably been the market leader. The sheer number of units in the hands of users has created an entirely new market for supporting accessories. Right from covers to card readers, from adaptors to docks, you can find many of these accessories that extend the iPad in various ways.

One such accessory is the AV Speaker Stand for the iPad by Logitech. It functions as a dock with very basic features. All black in design, the front features a stand where you can connect your iPad (all versions are compatible). Also in the front are the buttons for power, volume control and infrared receiver so you can control the dock with a remote.

The rear features a cylindrical set of speakers, which also weigh the stand down. The stand, unfortunately, needs to be connected to the power and does not work on battery. But not all is bad with the stand; despite the plastic build of the casing holding your iPad, it’s built quite strong and sturdy. The casing rotates so you can view your iPad in either landscape or portrait mode and the dock charges your iPad when connected. The viewing angle can be tilted to your comfort in both modes.

And if you are still not happy, the video out connection will let you hook up your iPad to a larger screen or the TV. Unfortunately, there is no audio out so you will have to rely on the speakers for sound. Thankfully, the speakers produce sound at a respectable volume and decent quality, but the lack of an audio connect still seems an odd design and functionality decision by Logitech.

Article continues below

There is an AUX connection with which you can connect other devices to the stand, so you are not confined to playing sound just from your iPad, and can also connect your phone or music player.

The Logitech AV Speaker Stand is a fairly basic stand for the iPad. Its primary function is to charge your iPad, hold it up and play your music; and all of this it does it very well. While it will not be winning any design awards, the stand will sit nicely on your table. Priced at Dh399, the Logitech AV Speaker stand gives you just enough bang for your buck.

OpenText has been busy this week. Leaving aside the US$ 233 million EasyLink buy, it has also announced a partnership with ConceptShare that will make it easier for business users to collaborate, annote and mark up creative work across a while bunch of assets from documents to images to time-based video and web pages.

OpenText Media Management, along with ConceptShare, enables an enterprise to produce, use and publish digital media after having reviewed and approved them. The partnership, through OpenText Media Management, will also enable users to track feedback, change requests and approval status.

That the two companies have come together to provide easier creative review, collaboration and workflow is no surprise, really, as ConceptShare and the OpenText Media Management product do fit in together nicely.

What is ConceptShare?

ConceptShare, which was founded in 2006, has built up a visual collaboration platform that scales to any size in terms of workflow, size of project or industry.

With it, enterprises can eliminate traditional feedback mechanisms across enterprises such as email, blogs or even web conferencing. The idea here is not to replace any of these much-loved tools, but to add something into the equation.

That something is software that offers easy markup tools — as easy as pointer, pen, crop and highlighter — that grants collaborators to visually review print, web and video assets.

It’s important to note that this is not just document markup and that it also works on video and other visual representations, too.

ConceptShare With OpenText

By partnering with OpenText Media Media Management, then, the ConceptShare integration will also enable collaboration for both internal and external users as a creative project is developed. It also ensures that all actions from feedback to change requests to approvals are saved, including reviewer actions, along with a history of those actions.

All annotations, change requests and approvals gathered after a review cycle is finished are stored as metadata and can be used for auditing, metrics, and reporting purposes.

By partnering with ConceptShare, a creative review technology leader, OpenText Media Management users gain sophisticated functionality within a familiar platform. We’re allowing multiple users to interact remotely, drive to approval on creative materials and gain additional productivity from our leading digital asset management platform,” stated Vinit, Doshi, CEM VP at Open Text.

OpenText Buys EasyLink

But this is not all OpenText has been doing this week. It also announced the acquisition of EasyLink for a buy price of approximately US$ 310 million.

Easylink is a cloud-based secure information exchange vendor and should offer OpenText deeper footprints in the cloud and mobile space. There are few enough details on the deal and where it will go, but OpenText CEO Mark Barrenechea states the company sees strong opportunities for customers, partners, employees and product roadmap. What he means by this is not clear, but more on this later as it happens.

The transaction is expected to close by mid-to-late summer 2012, subject to Easy Link’s stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
