Gadget review – Huawei Honor U8860
Chinese technology group Huawei, which is better known for making telecom infrastructure equipment, caused a stir when it moved into mobile phone manufacturing 18 months ago.
It was one of the first companies to release a US$100 smartphone about a year ago and has followed this up with the rather impressive Huawei Honor U8860, which will reach SA shores early next year.
The Huawei Honor is not quite the equal of the latest Apple phone and operating system but it can hold its own against the likes of HTC and Samsung, which also use Google’s Android operating system. There is tiny difference in look and performance compared with its competitors and, at about R3000, it undercuts most if not all its rivals.
It also has a telling advantage in terms of battery life. Most smartphone batteries last a day or so; the Huawei Honor lasts up to three days.
The phone, however, has some shortcomings. It has only 512MB of internal memory (and a slot for a memory card) and its camera is good but not outstanding.
Even so, for the price, the Huawei Honor is a very good deal.
