Gadget review: Samsung NX100
INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS
Samsung NX100
Want a step up from your point-and-shoot compact camera? Then think about Samsung’s NX100, its new Compact Interchangeable Lens Camera (CILC).
If you just want to grab shots at a kids’ party or while on holiday, it can do that, coming with all the usual quick set menus. And a flick of a switch gives you access to 720 pixel HD video.
But this light camera is loaded with handy features if you are more ambitious and want more creative control over your photos.
The innovative I-Function lens grant you to scroll easily through manual settings (shutter speed, aperture, exposure evaluation), white balance and ISO – light sensitivity rating/ setting). There is a 14.6 megapixel sensor, dust reduction and a 3-inch viewing screen.
The camera I tested came with a detachable 20-50mm ED lens with a 20mm F2.8 lens. A wider range of lenses is expected to be released during the second half of this year.
Getting used to the controls took only a few minutes. The general layout is very user friendly, with most of the required data needed for good exposures being displayed on the AMOLED screen.
But, as a professional photographer, I found the lack of a viewfinder problematic. I hate looking at an image on a screen when composing images, and these days live view has become the norm for most compact cameras.
I took the camera to Emerentia Dam and was pleasantly surprised at the exposure range as well as the sensor’s ability to handle contrast, rendering a good tonal range, and producing vivid and crisp images.
I preferred shooting on aperture priority utilising the three exposure metering modes as well as the EV capability. Results, needless to say, were very impressive.
The camera also grants you to apply different effects to the image – a sort of onboard Photoshop. The soft focus and fish-eye effects would probably be the most handy.
All in all, the camera has a range of features which are handy and user friendly, but fails because of the lack of a viewfinder and onboard flash (both optional extras).
The recommended retail price for the NX100 camera is R6 499 (incl VAT). For more info, see www.samsung.co.za – The Star
