HP Envy 114 Printer Review
Date: January 21, 2012
Home and home office users who need a printer, but dont have much room for one may wish to think about the new Envy model from HP. The Envy 114 is cast from a completely different mold than your standard printer. In fact, one could argue it hardly resembles a printer at all. Shaped just like the other Envy units, the 100 and the 110, it looks more like a DVR box or a DVD player than it does a printer.
The Envy 114 is compact in design, but offers a powerful set of features. The unit itself only measures 16.8 x 13.25 x 4 (WxDxH) and weighs about 16 lbs. For starters, it it a 4-in-1 which grants you to print, scan, copy, and eFax (faxing without a phone line). Part of the reason it stays compact and conspicuous is that when it is not printing, the paper tray remains inside the printer. It is not a blazing fast printerit prints a max of 7 ISO ppmbut it is not painfully slow either. Part of the HP ePrint family, mobile device users can easily email document and pics to the Envy 114 and have them printed. It also is an AirPrint compatible device which grants it to print directly from iOS and Android devices. You can also use a variety of web apps, right from the 4.3 touchscreen display.
The Envy 114 also comes with solid paper handling for a compact device. Despite being small in stature, the printer houses a duplex unit which grants you to automatically print on both sides of the page. The paper tray holds up to 80 sheets of paper at a time, so users may have to refill the paper tray a tiny more often.
The Envy 114 comes with a two-cartridge ink system split between a black cartridge and a standard tricolor ink cartridge. The unit ships with standard capacity cartridges; the black cartridge is rated for 200 pages, and the tri-color for 165 pages. Each of the cartridges does have a high-capacity option which can print up to 600 black pages and 440 pages, so nearly three times the volume for each cartridge.
Overall, this looks like another solid effort on the part of HP for home and home office users.
