Reviewing Review Sites

(2011-10-03) Reviewing Review Sites

Review sites are popping up all over the place. Some are good, some are bad.

Recently, a friend of mine was speaking to me over coffee about how many people these days are making money off of review sites. Not only that, but actually there are literally thousands if not millions of review sites out there on the world wide web today. After our discussion, we wondered why there were so many. And I decided to look at one. In particular, it is a printer review site.

This printer review site actually looks legitimate. Some of the other review sites I saw looked scammy. All you have to do is go over to Google and type in anything. For example printer + reviews.

Its all about incentives, states Bill Walsh, a small-time Internet marketer. If theres a way to make money, people will try to do it, even if there is a tiny bit of a grey area in terms of morals. Walsh stated that this has been going on for years, but the search engines like Google and Yahoo and Bing are trying their ideal to stop it. This scammy and spammy practice is called black hat search engine optimization. Years ago, people could rank a website pretty easily using these immoral methods. But ultimately, it cheats the end user. And the search engines want to provide their end users with the ideal content. So they try to prevent black hat practices all the time. Walsh continued to add that Google still has a lot of work to do. Even in 2011, people are coming up with more ways to game the search engines. He cited a case about a company called Dcor my eyes, where a man sold eye glasses, but he never gave the glasses to the customers. People complained about him on forums, linking back to his site, and he got lots of traffic. Google soon de-indedxed him, meaning they pulled his site from their search results.

A lot of these guys make a quick buck, but once they get de-indexed, their sites are basically invisible, states Walsh. its in everyones long term interest to provide good content and rank your site in an ethical way. He concurs with me that the printer site, myprinterreviews, was doing an ok job. Sites like myprinterreviews are good because they are getting traffic, but their reviews are honest. How can you tell if a review his honest? Well, thats another story, states Walsh. But look for reviews that have both the pros and cons of something. If a review promises something that is too good to be true, it probably is.

Ah, the old adage of too good to be true. I bet theres a review on that saying.
