Sprint Kyocera Echo: Gadget Review
NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Kyocera’s Echo, available at Sprint(S), is the first Google(GOOG) Android smartphone to come with two touchscreens as standard equipment. Sounds a tiny goofy, but it starts to make some sense when you begin testing it out.
Specs:provider: Sprint network: CDMA/1x EV-DO screen size: 3.5-inch/4.7 in tablet mode screen details: Two 3.5-inch 480-by-800 capacitive processor: Snapdragon, 1-GHz camera: 5-megapixel camera on back, VGA on front price: $200 after $100 rebate with two-year contractThe secret here is in the software. Kyocera took about a year to develop the phone, which features a system that grants you to run two separate programs — on the two separate screens — at the same time. Or, you can run one program on both screens for a semi-tablet experience. The phone works as a regular, handheld Android or you can manipulate the dual screens to come together via a mechanical hinge system that while complicated to figure out initially, is operated with the push of a finger. When together, the screens measure 4.7 inches. The only downside is the black line running down the center of the screen. The Echo’s system takes a toll on its overall size. The Echo measures 4.5 inches by 2.2 by 0.7 inches and weighs in at a whopping 6.81 ounces. That’s big! It runs Android 2.2 and features Wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS and much of the usual beloved Android stuff including a custom, built-in YouTube app. Aside from its strange looks, the idea of a split/put together screen has a lot of merit — after a few minutes of use, it’s tough to go back to a smaller screen. The two screens do take their toll on battery life, but Sprint gives you a second battery in the box. Expect about a half-a-day’s worth of juice per battery. The is probably not the last twin-screen design we will see in the future — anticipate Kyocera to improve on the design (and battery life?). –Written by Gary Krakow in New York.>To submit a news tip, send an email to: tips@thestreet.com.
